I always thought that eating donkey meat was haram, or that the ritual sacrifice of the animal to ward off drought was a forbidden form of superstition in Islam. Perhaps deviating from the doctrine should be viewed as a metaphor in light of oppressive French colonialism. I have no idea.

What is clearly visible and audible, however, is that the donkey with its legs tied is stressed and deliberately suffering pain as its throat is slit. Definitely not a pretty opening to the film, which is otherwise cinematographically sound. Yes, the director's role as the village idiot Miloud does become irritating after a while. But he eventually gets his deserved punishment.

The animal cruelty, the driving of the donkeys and horses with sticks or whips—which actually perform the heavy work for the Algerian farmers—causes me to give this film a failing grade.
