The film is a drama in which clichés follow each other in rapid succession. The acting and dialogues are also of a very low level. Still, the film manages to earn two stars thanks to Prince's presence. It's not that he's a great actor, but there's something about his presence. That, in combination with the music, made me want to watch the movie.

I do have an appreciation for Prince as an artist. A great talent, although I don't always have to do much with his music. The album Purple Rain is quite worthwhile with funky dance hits. So let's just watch the accompanying movie. There it is clear that Prince is a genius in music, but comes across as clumsy in film. It's not that bad, but reminds me of the Elvis movies at times. You would also expect more creativity from Prince. The film is not beautiful and both in terms of story and acting it is sometimes hard to find.

Fortunately the songs make up for a lot and you can see the artist at work on stage. Fans will be wild about this. But as a film, this is certainly not top notch.

For several years now (especially since I've been using Spotify) I've been going through entire oeuvres of artists, preferably chronologically. So now it's Prince's turn and I thought: then also this film. My father still has it somewhere.

Well, the 80s atmosphere is nicely portrayed, but actually this is a very bad film. Clichéd and wafer-thin, and especially badly acted. Of the 111 minutes, about 60 are filled with music, mostly performances. In itself that's fine too, because the music is good, very good even and makes the film still watchable. But as a film itself very quickly forgotten. 2.5*.
