The Ghost and Mrs. Muir plot

"THE SPIRIT... so willing! THE FLESH... so weak! THE ROMANCE... so wonderful!"

Widow Lucy (Gene Tierney) plans to make something beautiful out of her life. She moves to a house on the English coast, where the previous resident, an old sea captain (Rex Harrison), haunts like a ghost. His attempts to chase her out of the house fail, and an almost unbelievable bond of love develops. When her money runs out, he "writes" a bestseller based on his life. Lucy comes into contact with a very lively man (George Sanders) and has to make a choice. Does she choose the spiritual or the carnal? However, the captain must also choose a direction that can haunt him forever.

A delightful old-school film, the likes of which are unfortunately too few and far between these days. The atmospheric black-and-white cinematography perfectly complements this romantic fantasy. Gene Tierney (always a pleasure to watch) and Rex Harrison give excellent performances.

Director Mankiewicz may not be mentioned very often in the list of top directors, but secretly he has a considerable number of very beautiful films to his name: All about Eve, A Letter to Three Wives and others.

A decent fantasy film that never feels dull. That's something I'm always a bit wary of with these kinds of films. In fact, the plot is quite gripping! Gene Tierney, a young widow, moves into a cottage on the English coast, where things get spooky when Rex Harrison appears in the form of a ghost! Despite some initial hiccups, a seemingly impossible romance develops between the two. Just when you think the story is fizzling out, it takes a few nice twists. The acting was good, although Rex Harrison reminded me of a lesser version of Humphrey Bogart with his crackly voice.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir tells the story of the eponymous widow who comes to live in an old house haunted by a sailor, and who ultimately tries to find love again. It does have its charm, especially in the first half, when Mrs. Muir encounters the ghost and gets to know him, all in a typical old-fashioned house on the English south coast. But in the second half, it started to drag more and more. It's a rather old-fashioned film, with a somewhat Victorian moral. And ultimately, it's a very sentimental film, especially when Mrs. Muir tries to find a husband again, and that's where I found my interest waning. Fortunately, the ending was quite strong. Speaking of waning, it looks beautiful and atmospheric, with gorgeous shots of the English coast. The romantic fantasy element also worked quite well, but ultimately, this isn't really my kind of film. Still, I can agree that it's strong in its genre.
