The life of the almost 19-year-old Marius (Horst Buchholz), living in Marseille, has gotten into a rut. Everything in his life is planned by his cafe-owning father. He decides to make a 5 year journey by sea. But the night before he leaves, he meets girl next door Fanny (Leslie Caron). She tells him she's in love with him, and he finds out it's mutual. He must choose between the exciting life at sea or spend the rest of his life with Fanny.
