Recently saw the film again on the BBC, my first viewing was maybe 20 years ago and only that drama scene at the bell was still in my mind, so time for a re-acquaintance. Visually, the film is a top achievement, if you consider that everything was shot in the Pinewood studios, it is all the more clever that the makers succeeded in making the locations look very realistic as Himalaya/India.
This film does not have overwhelming acting performances, Kerr and Farrar are ok, but the show is stolen by Kathleen Byron, to my knowledge she was never really known, but when you look at her oeuvre you wonder why she is never more famous has become. In this film her character jumps off the canvas, the story is a bit fragmented, but her role makes it all a bit more acceptable. As she draws attention to herself in the film with sometimes her terrifying look in her eyes and then the transformation from nun to worldly woman, breathtaking. I already indicated that the story is a bit fragmentary, sometimes the subjects jump from one piece to the next, so that some things remain underexposed or do not come out at all, what was the role of Jean Simmons? I got the feeling that she had been used as an image fill. That is the only drawback, but an essential one, of the film. Otherwise a great movie, the lighting, the effects, just think that the wind is constantly present in every scene, if not in sound then in flickering lights, fluttering curtains or moving robes, but the most terrifying thing is that monotonous howl which makes its despondency palpable. The music finishes it off, very striking and not overpowering. Powell and Presburger delivered a fine film that has stood the test of time well.

Psychological drama - certainly bears the cachet of its time - but does come across quite well cinematically, with good photography, but I didn't see much in it.

What did they have to put Deborah Kerr in nun's clothes? "Heaven knows Mr. Allison"...

Atmospheric classic that must have it especially for its beautiful decor and setting. That monastery so high in the mountains is truly stunning. Enjoy every time that bell has to be rung. Acting is also more than decent.

Story wise a bit slow and a bit too slow to really catch on. Film also made entirely from a Western Catholic point of view. Film barely touched me, rather distant and factual. Still a strong and promising start, but I would have liked more focus on monastic life. That man came a little too emphatically in the foreground.
