Beautiful images and music, but rather stilted. Bertolucci is a fairly genius filmmaker, but he has to watch out for that. The characters are literary fabrications rather than real people. As a result, the drama loses its impact. Shame about the strong actors. Still, there are some nice scenes in it. Don't go beyond 3 stars.

Based on the book by Paul Bowles, American writer who lived most of his life in Tangier, Morocco, one of the most beautiful films of all time, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, his cinematographer Vittorio Storaro shot fantastic images in Morocco, the Sahara and Mali. The opening credits of the film already indicate the quality with which this film was directed, followed by the scene in the port of Tangier: we are not tourists, but travelers say Port and Kit. Although the film starts slowly and some sex scenes do not really fit, the image alone is enough to take your breath away. It is clear that this film has cost a fortune, if only because it was shot in various places in North Africa with the utmost care. You must have seen the film several times to understand it properly. The writer Paul Bowles appears in the beginning and at the end of the film. Ryuichi Sakamoto's music is beautiful, through this movie I got to know his oeuvre, a master pianist, possibly the best in the world. If you have ever traveled through Morocco, you will recognize many places and customs in this exceptionally beautiful film. I recommend everyone to watch this movie several times and especially to look at the details. Amina Annabi also plays a brilliant role in Mahrnia's tent, once this singer almost won the Eurovision Song Contest for France. Now she shows her beautiful breasts here. So watch
