Il Nido del Ragno plot
Whitmore, a professor specializing in dead languages, has to contact his colleague Roth in Budapest, who has not reported for a while. He turns out to have translated an ancient religious tablet and for mysterious reasons his life is no longer certain. A day after their introduction, Roth is found dead and Whitmore is not allowed to leave town for interrogation. While examining the tablets himself, he makes the horrifying discovery that has cost his colleague his life and endangers his own.

An obscure Italian secret tip? No, that's a bit of a disappointment.
Argento influence does shine through somewhat, but visually it lags behind somewhat, the story feels a bit too familiar at times, the gore is a bit disappointing and the mystery is unravelled after only an hour.
Overall a pretty decent mystery/horror film and the stop-motion baby provides one more classic scene.
Director Giagni disappeared after this first decent attempt at TV work.

A highly entertaining Italian horror film. The pacing isn't particularly strong; the film is frequently a bit slow, but when it picks up steam, it really takes off. The story isn't all that impressive; it's a familiar tale of someone who goes on an investigation and stumbles upon extraordinary secrets. A bit like the Italian The Wicker Man. But in Il Nido del Ragno, by the relatively unknown director Gianfranco Giagni, there are some truly memorable sequences. Every scene where the demonic lady jumps in is brilliantly done, and of course, there's that fantastic and highly memorable scene at the climax with the baby transforming into a spider. Such silliness stays with you for a while.
