Everyone knows the Ride of the Valkyries from Apocalypse Now. This very first biopic, the debauched Cleoptra may not have a name, has nevertheless been largely forgotten. The directors nevertheless tackle the subject in a high-flown manner. Wagnerian indeed!

As befits a biography, we follow the life course fairly closely, which has quite a few highs and lows. Famous contemporaries such as Bakunin, Liszt and Ludwig II pass by, among others. Wagner's anti-Semitism is not discussed, unless it is the subtly gaping Giacomo Meyerbeer. The character sketch from a young, liberal democrat to a conservative, conceited jerk lacks some plot but is correct. The aging process accelerates at the end. The visit of the three ghosts is comical and the brief revival in Bayreuth makes it a happy ending
