Jesus, how bad!

I was kind of expecting a film like Girl with a Pearl Earring, where although English is spoken, the atmosphere is very close to what I imagine of the Netherlands in the Golden Age. In any case, I expected beautiful images of Amsterdam as a backdrop.

And then it turns out that the film is not only in English, but also shot in England. Phew, what a disappointment! If Amsterdam is too expensive to film, choose Leiden or Delft or something. Now it doesn't look Dutch for a moment. Anyway, historically there is little truth to it anyway. There were also no monasteries in Holland at the time of the tulip mania, while Catholicism seems to be the dominant movement in this film.

In short, history is not really taken seriously and serves more as a framework for the story. That doesn't have to be a bad thing at all, I can tolerate a lot of nonsense as long as it benefits the viewing experience, but unfortunately I can't get away from it here, despite the fact that the images themselves still look neat.

If the focus of the film is mainly on the story, it doesn't really help if the plot is pretty moronic with mistaken identities and drama and whatnot. Some things you can see coming a mile away, but some elements are quite bizarre and are indeed more likely to be expected in a soap opera, as noted above. It's not all that pleasant to look at, and I stopped the film several times out of boredom. The 0.5* is therefore inevitable.

They were already about to make this historical drama in 2004, but for financial reasons they postponed it for ten years. Unfortunately, I never had the feeling that I was in the seventeenth century or in the Netherlands. It is dark all the time, even during the day. Maybe they wanted to avoid artificial lighting? The wallpaper music by Danny Elfman is disturbing, which does not fit the period at all. The costumes are beautiful, especially that blue dress by Alicia Vikander.

Tulip mania.

But not really. This is just a romantic costume drama. The setting has its uses, but never actually plays a leading role. At best, the whole tulip thing gives the main characters some activity, but the story can easily be rewritten in a different setting.

It is mainly about Vikander's love affairs and the problems that arise from them. A somewhat tame event that never really manages to become exciting, but also never really manages to fascinate as a drama. It is perhaps all a bit too light-hearted for that, with a high number of characters who have to provide comic relief. This becomes apparent when you can even put Galifianakis in your film.

The beginning and end suggest a more beautiful drama, with a moving and scanning camera, but the rest of the film is simply shot very well and classically. It looks neat, but not very exciting or challenging. And so it is a mediocre snack, a film that does not really convince and is a disappointment in a lot of similar films.

2.5*
