A thrilling film that's also very well directed. I liked the Hackman-Dillon duo; Dillon plays a bit in Hackman's shadow here...not a bad thing...he's the newbie here. The pace was fast from the start. They travel to Paris, Hamburg, and finally Berlin. There are some good action scenes, as well as a welcome dose of humor without going overboard. A truly good and varied film that never bored me for a second.

A disappointing film in which a father and son travel to Europe when the mother is taken hostage. A fairly standard espionage-like story, the film feels a bit disjointed in places. The father-son relationship is the film's focal point, but it often feels a bit implausible. A few tense moments, and Gene Hackman does nothing wrong (the rest of the cast is a bit disappointing).

Nice.

It's a shame that the production values occasionally feel a bit like a TV movie. It's not Hackman's fault; he's excellent as always. And so is the young Matt Dillon—surprisingly good, in fact. The soundtrack, in particular, places everything firmly in the 80s with its ugly, tinny synthesizer sounds. And perhaps also the whole idea of East Berlin.

The whole idea could have worked if the story had been a little less dull and American. Right now, it feels a bit too much like a city trip, a stereotypical American vacation to Europe in half a week. A sort of less comical version of Eurotrip (2004). And besides, the same idea has been better developed in countless films, from Frantic to the Taken series. Was this the first? Surely there's something to be found in the 1930s.
