One of the most beautiful films we came across in the Public Domain film sector.

Atmospheric B-movie in which a young widow and her sister fall under the spell of the mysterious spiritualist Alexis.

Boyfriend calls in detective to unmask this Alexis.

Beautiful séances...I think they were all the rage around this time (1948).

The Netherlands was 10 years behind before we got the Greet Hofmans affair here, but this film has nothing to do with that (although we still see Bernhard in the role of a suspicious friend).

Very good plot twists, well acted, beautifully filmed, beautiful atmosphere.

Worth looking up.

The story that was crammed into a script by no fewer than four writers is not very special. The story about a traumatized woman who experiences the presence of her deceased husband and knocks on the door of a spiritualist is even somewhat laughable at times. A transparent story with an unsurprising twist. Still, The Amazing Mr. X a film worth seeing.

The reason for this is the camera work of John Alton, which gives the film the cinematographic appearance of a film noir. A moody black-and-white film with remarkable camera angles, magnificent play with light and dark and beautiful contrasts. Delicious to consume. Alton once said the following words: “It's not what you light, it's what you don't light”. His working method in a nutshell.

The characters are generally solidly designed. The script provides a light-hearted involvement with their inner thoughts and creates plausible characters with just enough depth to evoke an intrigued feeling in the viewer. Lynn Bari plays a nice leading role as the traumatized widow. The spiritualist is played by Turhan Bey, who gives his character a pleasant kind of ambivalence. Finally, the role of the antagonist is worth mentioning. The actor's name is Donald Curtis. At times he reminded me strongly of Vincent Price with his intonation and his presence. The other characters are well filled in without standing out excessively.

Finally, a quick mention of the atmospheric locations and conclude with the conclusion that The Amazing Mr X is not a film that you absolutely must see. It's a nice film with beautiful camera work. No more.
