Le Trou Normand plot
Village idiot Hyppolite is happy. He inherits the well-functioning village inn "Le Trou Normand". However, the will also states that he must have a diploma in order to run the inn. And so, at 32, Hyppolite goes back to school.

An amusing, unpretentious film, set—as is very often the case with a comedian in the lead role—in a small French village where everyone knows everyone, the mayor, the doctor, and the teacher call the shots, and the rest of the population is very well-disposed towards our comedian.
This time it is Bourvil, as the village idiot, who draws attention to himself in a role that suits him perfectly. Naturally, romance is not lacking, and just under an hour and a half is quickly filled.

The village idiot Hippolyte inherits an inn from his deceased uncle by will, but must return to school as a condition to obtain his primary school diploma. He becomes a sensation in the Norman village of Courteville and far beyond, while his wicked, jealous Aunt Augustine does everything to make him fail. This is a good-humored comedy, intended more for children, with Bourvil in one of his typical roles as a dim-witted character with a childlike spirit. The film (colored!) is also known for the first acting performance of a then 17-year-old Brigitte Bardot as the cousin Hippolyte is in love with. Simple and fun entertainment.

Honneur à Hyppolite!
A rather standard, and also very predictable Bourvil farce, I believe – although it crossed my mind for a moment that in the few other examples from that genre I’ve seen, he really did play a very different kind of fool, and that this Hyppolite, too, might simply be a marvel of acting on his part. Still, I find it hard to see it as anything more than a farce, and the jokes are also rather lame – although there are a few that go beyond the limits of my French language skills, so perhaps I did miss something here and there.
Yet no one will remember the film because of Bourvil, as it is the first film BB participates in. And it does seem somewhat as though they already realized back then who they had brought in, as evidenced by the phone conversation three-quarters of the way through the film: Javotte? C'est un prénom qu'on n'oublie pas. Je peux même faire votre portrait! Les cheveux dorés, des yeux hazeltte, les joues rondes, une bouche sensuelle, une taille mince et suple, et puis des, des, oh là là!
But perhaps even more telling, the big band at the party has signs with... yes, BB. Try doing that in your first film. What is striking, however, is that she hardly looks like we would come to know her later; every now and then you have to blink and think, 'is that really her?' So apparently, that is how much difference a hairstyle makes – at least in the original black-and-white version I saw, those golden horseshoes are definitely beautiful, but not as over the top as later. And perhaps actually even more beautiful.
In any case, for a first film appearance, it could be called a sort of sign of things to come.
