Exciting, well-written thriller about former soldier Kitt [John Garfield], who, after two years of captivity and torture, manages to escape from the hands of the Spanish fascists with the help of an American police officer. While he tries to unmask the person who murdered his rescuer, a group of Nazis try to get information from him about a special Nazi flag. The atmospheric score by Constantin Bakaleinikoff and Roy Webb earned this film a deserved Oscar nomination. The cast is impressive, but John Garfield's strong leading role is only matched by Walter Slezak as an invalid Norwegian professor with a fairly unique knowledge of torture techniques and the underlying psychology over the years. Unfortunately, the female leads are less effective, including the normally reliable Maureen O'Hara, who makes a somewhat uninterested impression as the femme fatale. That's a shame, because that doesn't make this a classic. But this is definitely worth seeing.

Spy thriller in which part of the tension is created by the vague balance between real events on the one hand and the mental state of John Garfield on the other. The sound effects play an important role and praise can be given to RKO resident composer Roy Webb for this.

I am not familiar with director Richard Wallace, but he has done his job well, in collaboration with screenwriter Warren Duff and cinematographer Nicholas Musuraca (both involved in the classic Out of the Past, among others). Nice camera angles, playing with light and shadow...

I thought John Garfield's acting was good, alongside Walter Slezak and femme fatale Maureen O'Hara.

The production contains a charged atmosphere typical of films made during and about WWII, and that is simply impossible to reproduce.
