Fun day out sailing on Polish waters. I almost felt like it myself, while I've never been on a sailboat before. Polanski's debut is already a very strong start. The fact that everything in the film takes place on the day itself and that there is no pre-history, makes the developments just a little more surprising and penetrating. The mood swings back and forth (just like the boat by the way), but the three strong actors take the film to a higher level. Ultimately, this, combined by the photography, the soundtrack and a strong ending, convinces.

Incidentally, this film in the genre 'day out with a strange third person' has now been surpassed by the Romanian Pescuit Sportiv (2007) , which is absolutely is recommended.

Only three characters appear in a limited environment and time span, but their mutual relationships are thoroughly worked out. Andrzej is rich and successful by Eastern Bloc standards. He owns a fancy car, a small yacht and a beautiful woman who is more than ten years younger than himself. She may have married him for his money. The nameless hitchhiker soon becomes a louse in the fur. Both men show cocky behavior and compete for the sympathy of the wife. That the poor bastard beats the rich citizen could have a social significance, but that component had to be put in by the regime's Polanski. The director initially wanted to play the part of a hitchhiker himself, but in the end only did his voice. Krystyna's voice has also been dubbed.

Their sailing trip on the lake provides beautiful images, for example of a sunrise, often with a horizon that is high on the screen. Well found is the sequence in which it is alternately shown what the hitchhiker sees through his left and right eye. Imaging presented practical problems. During the drive, driver Leon Niemczyk could not see the road because of the cameramen on the hood. An employee tied to the mast dropped his camera into the water.

Komeda's music uses a jazz saxophone. The lazy atmosphere suits the start of the sailing trip. When the wind picks up, the music is agitated. Via the subtitles you also pick up some sailing terms, such as tiller, rudder indicator and fokkenval. Strong points are the atmospheric setting and the mutual power struggle that has an exciting and surprising course.

Interesting debut by director Roman Polanski, shot in moody black and white and technically expertly put together. The sultry, unsteady atmosphere is well-hit and the film actually subtly misleads you as a viewer. Social and political subtext enough if you want to see that in it, but the film is also good to enjoy as a mysterious love triangle.
