"What Is The Most Incredible Thing A Woman Ever Did For $1,000,000?"
George Dumurrier is a wealthy but unscrupulous doctor who runs a clinic with his brother Henry. Despite his marriage to Susan, who is asthmatic, George has an affair with the beautiful Jane, a photographer's assistant. When Susan dies under suspicious circumstances, George is plagued with guilt. He breaks off his relationship with Jane, but soon begins a new affair with the stripper and call girl Monica, who resembles Susan like two drops of water. Then George is charged with murder when it turns out that he inherits a million dollars from Susan.

Predecessor to Fulci's masterpiece A Lizard in a Woman's Skin with some themes from Les Diaboliques and (to a lesser extent) Vertigo.
Largely a kind of ero-thriller (not yet such a very obligatory genre in 1969) until the bizarre plot twist at the end of the film.
Reasonably groovy sixties-esque, entertaining but not very strong across the board, although the whole plot is nicely complicated.
The gore known from the later Fulci is here limited to a nice rotting corpse.

Beautiful film that can be found in all kinds of giallo lists. For me there is a big noir influence about it anyway. The plot is complex, a lot of attention to chiaroscuro lighting, brooding jazzy soundtrack, Jean Sorel whose morals are unclear, and yes there is a femme fatale at play. Hitchcock and more specifically Vertigo also came to mind. And apparently Vertigo and this film have gone back to the same source material, although the effect is different. Excellent acting performances by Jean Sorel and Marisa Mell. Also enjoy the shoots on location in San Francisco and the gas chamber of the prison of San Quentin. Little topper.

1969, flower power, sexual freedom, and deceit are the elements that play out in this film set in San Francisco. Beautiful clothes and a very melodic score complete the overall style. The film itself explores the problems of relationships, where nothing is as it initially appears. The finale is well-conceived and developed. The key word is: attention. For its time, it was well-constructed and well-shot. The Italians mastered this type of film, verging on giallo, superbly.
