Director Regis Wargnier is more into grand epics than subtlety, and so this French/English/South African co-production is most reminiscent of Hollywood.

Then it would have definitely received an Oscar nomination, because this is the kind of drama that the Academy can't get enough of.

Fortunately, the story is bizarre enough to be intriguing, and the science discussion adds an extra bonus.

Acting, camera work, all flawless, although it seems as if entire sections were cut on the editing table to keep it to a manageable two hours... some things are touched upon very quickly and then never returned to.

We have had more and more trouble lately with how to deal with history, and the argument is often brought up that we are trying to impose today's standards on the events of the past. But that is not true in many cases, and in this example it is true again. Even a hundred years ago it was already quite clear that what is done in the film is morally unacceptable. In fact, that is a theme in the film itself. And apart from that, the film gives a nice example of how science works - also quite a theme in recent years.

As a film I think this is the least of director Wargnier so far. The actors are fine, the locations are beautiful, the subject is interesting and relevant. Still, nothing really comes of it that is compelling, and what exactly is missing I can't really put into words. Maybe just seen at the wrong moment.
