Tarfaya plot
Fortune seekers, people smugglers, dropouts, police officers and other authorities have a stranglehold on each other in Tarfaya, South Morocco. Tarfaya is a remote coastal town on Morocco's southern border with a dilapidated British fortress. Living there is what you call a Tantalus torment. There is nothing but sand for fifty miles to the nearest town, Layouna, but westwards over the sea, the will-o'-the-wisps of the Canary Island of Fuerteventura lure. 'So close that you forget the sea, until you lie on the bottom,' sigh the inhabitants of Tarfaya. Miriam (Touria Alaoui) is one of the many fortune seekers who arrive with only a suitcase. She is looking for the people smuggler Riki, but is robbed by Hassan, the first man she meets. The local police chief manages to get Miriam's money back and gradually develops an above-average interest in her - as does Hassan, who turns out not to be so bad.
