Barfuss plot

Nick Keller is a quitter: he loses job after job, but now works again (for a day) as a cleaner in a mental institution. On leaving the institution, he barely manages to prevent a suicide attempt by Leila, one of the patients. This has consequences: Leila follows her rescuer home and stands barefoot outside his door at night. Nick makes frantic efforts to get rid of her, but her decision is made: she will stay with Nick forever.
