Bullets over Broadway plot

"A killer comedy!"

In this comedy, producer Julian Marx gives a struggling playwright, David Shayne, the opportunity to work on Broadway. However, Marx does impose some conditions. A talentless showgirl, but the sweetheart of the sponsor and also infamous mob boss Viterelli and Broadway star Helen Sinclair (Oscar winner Dianne Wiest) all have to get a part. Desperately, Shayne tries to make the best of it with the supplied 'stars', with the gruff bodyguard Cheech also revealing himself as a 'talented' lyricist. Before the curtain finally rises, the bullets are already flying around.

A nice Allen, who never really gets big, but who made me look with a smile on my face the entire playing time, and that is also worth something.

Bullets Over Broadway is also a typical Allen, with striking and quirky characters and lots of dialogue, most of which is quite well written. The actors do it all properly and most of them are in the right place here. I especially enjoyed running into Jennifer Tilly in this. Not because she's such a great actress. But her irritating voice and her comedic timing are perfectly in place here and Allen has written her not very smart role around Tilly. John Cusack is also doing well. The frustration that comes up in him at a given moment because his play threatens to go wrong is quite hilarious.

The chaotic game and progress is hilarious at times, but I have to say that the level in the second half gradually went down a bit. Fortunately, the fun atmosphere is preserved until the end. Bullets over Broadway is a film that will appeal to most Allen aficionados, because it fits well into his oeuvre. I don't think it's his best, but it's a very nice one. Not great, but in fact there is not much negative to say.

3.5*

Typical Woody Allen comedy, this time about the Broadway milieu, mafia included. Woody isn't there and though Cusack tries his best and does it well, Woody needs Woody.

Good film that, as with all Allen films, demands attention and provokes a nice, understanding laugh from the fans.

Nice structure and this time not very many evergreens, but references to well-known show-biz stars (Porter, Kern...) or writers (Shakespeare, Poe...).

Excellent film in which a playwright is forced to work with the mafia to get his play on the stage. An entertaining film about artistic freedom versus (financial) compromises. Sharp dialogues and a great cast. The film is set on 1920s Broadway and also has a nice decoration.
