A real old Hollywood melodrama, rather typical of its time. Not my favorite genre of the era, as I often don't take drama very well when it's overplayed. This is actually a full-blooded soap opera, with characters that gain and lose character traits rather easily. Also the breakup between Mr. and Mrs. Dallas relies very much on the fact that Mr. always comes by exactly when Stella seems to be doing something wrong (which she doesn't). You have to like that kind of thing. It will never be completely my taste, although based on what I saw of him it really seems to be King Vidor's taste.

However, there is still plenty of beauty between all the typical soap idiosyncrasies and moments that seem to beg for your tears. As a film about class differences, this still has some bite. As easy as it is, the final scenes are effective and a little touching. An additional plus in that respect is that none of the characters are convicted. Stella, her husband and even the crass Ed Munn are all treated sympathetically, even if they make unsympathetic choices.

Stanwyck is also indispensable for a role like this. Like Davis or Crawford, she has the advantage of not being afraid to throw herself into what many other actresses might have seen as an "ugly" role. The more Stella shakes herself, the more Stanwyck indulges and that fits the character. Alan Hale, the actor who seemed to be in every movie in the 1930s, is also very good as Stella's potential lover.

Well, I watched this mainly for Stanwyck (and also because he sometimes wants to pop up in lists) and she did not disappoint. Certainly not a bad melodrama, but not an outlier for me either.
3*

I saw the remake from 1990 a few years ago and that is a disadvantage, because now I unfortunately knew the story. The two films are strikingly similar. This version mainly relies on Barbara Stanwyck's considerable talent as the altruistic mother. The other characters are filled in rather flatly, with the exception of Alan Hale who fills in the role of vulgar family friend in his own familiar way.

As a story quite strong in the beginning , the woman wants to move up the social ladder and thinks she can do that with the right man in her eyes , but she has no feelings for her

However , that is quite disappointing , moreover she does not want to give up her dissolute life after the birth of her child .

This soon drives a wedge between her and her husband , she refuses to follow him in a new job in New York and they grow apart .

Her selflessness only comes when it is already too late for her, Stanwyck plays the role with conviction again

Her daughter plays well, but as a character she is just a bit too bland to come across as believable.

Fascinating drama in which the happy ending is inevitable but not too realistic of course
