36 Quai des Orfèvres plot
For several months now, the Paris police have been trying to deal with a gang of heavily armed and violent robbers. The director of the judicial police, Robert Mancini (André Dussollier), is clearly opposed to his two detectives, Léo Vrinks (Daniel Auteuil) and Denis Klein (Gérard Depardieu). Whoever catches the gang becomes its successor. However, the detectives differ greatly in character and both have their own way of working, making the collaboration anything but smooth.

Paris is rocked by a number of brutal robberies in which a huge amount of money is stolen.
It is up to the French police to stop these robberies.
Director Robert Mancini is about to resign, and both Léo Vrinks and Denis Klein are in the running to take over this role.
To do this, they have to track down and arrest the gang.
Both gentlemen have their own way of working, and this can only go wrong.
It was quite difficult to follow this French-language film properly.
I was completely dependent on the subtitles.
Some words were poorly translated, because it concerns a Belgian subtitle.
Still, the film kept me fascinated by the tension, and as a viewer you are completely surprised.
I thought the ending was a bit bland, but there's still plenty to enjoy.
Proof that the French also make good films.
Nice to see Valeria Golino (Hot Shots!) after such a long time.

Daniel Auteuil (exactly 70 years old today) and Gérard Depardieu support this excellent police film with their well-known style and class, which makes it abundantly clear that correctness and unity can also be lost in the police apparatus compared to its own urge for promotion, success and fame.
A strong screenplay, direction and alternation between action and unraveling the intrigue make it fascinating until the end of this atmospheric film.
This is now more than 15 years old, but up-to-date and it is still nice to find an actress like Mylène Demongeot in the cast.
Director Olivier Marchal also claims a small role, as does Auteuil's daughter Aurore.

Great movie man! I do like that no nonsense style, knacker hard, cops stabbing each other in the back. Here no one is spared, no one is pure on the degree there are no good and bad characters. There is only a limit and the question of how far you want to go to reach the top. It's about integrity, about how violence destroys humanity. It is about alcoholism, repression of personal troubles and friendship. Friendship that you need but which can also be fatal. This movie has it all.
That is perhaps a strength and a weakness. If you're going to put this film in a box, you're always doing it short. It is probably the excessive violence and hardness that stands out most in this film. Still, I wouldn't say this is an action movie or a thriller. There are too many dramatic elements in it for that. I would prefer to see this film as a complex piece of music with many instruments. You really have to want to see the whole picture to understand what this film is doing. Violence is a means and not an end in itself. It does show very well what police officers have to endure and what immense pressure they are under. That makes it very believable what happened.
And that nose of Depardieu, wow that is a work of art in itself. Still in good shape here, but Auteuil surpasses him here. Wonderful two of those giants against each other. Where both have their faults and weaknesses and so you rise above the "good bad" contrast, which I find very pleasant. It is clear that every person in this film makes good and bad choices, for good or bad reasons, and that there are certain consequences. I find that very realistic and it keeps the dynamics between the two very interesting.
