Melodrama with psychological undertones is in many ways reminiscent of Rebecca and not just because of the presence of Judith Anderson. She plays the wife of Pete Morgan [Edward G Robinson], who becomes particularly upset when Nath [Lon McAllister], their new helper on the farm, decides to use a shortcut to get his chores done faster. Pete tries to convince Nath that danger lurks, especially near 'the red house' from the title.

Psychological trauma, obsessive behavior and violence are important ingredients in this somewhat slow-moving, but well-played psychological drama. In the exciting finale, director Delmer Daves uses a visual style that we often associate with neo noir and Robinson excels in a complex, but very beautiful role.

The mystery element was not maintained and was a bit drowned out by all kinds of teenage romances, causing the film to drag on a bit too long. It also became clear to me quite early on what was going on. Could have been a bit shorter, more powerful and darker for me.
