This film by Hungarian author Miklos Jancso is set in central Russia at the time of the Civil War in 1918. In Csillagosok, Katonák we witness the brutality and futility of war, in this case the one between the Red and White Armies that the hills near the Volga settle their battle. Viewed from the perspective of Hungarian troops fighting for the Red Army, the story examines the horror of these soldiers fighting for the Bolsheviks, as well as the surreality, chaos and seemingly random nature of war.
