Nice.

There is indeed a superficial link with Pan's Labyrinth, but as films they are two different approaches. Pan felt just a little more mature to me, A Monster Calls has the feeling of being a film for children at certain times.

Let me start by saying that I thought the animation pieces were brilliant. A beautiful, unique style that unfortunately is not extended through all 4 "stories". When the structure of the film was introduced I honestly didn't feel like the separate stories, but I was hooked pretty quickly. As far as I'm concerned, they should have made the entire film like this, because the contrast with the normal world was just a bit too big for me.

The stories themselves are also interesting. Reminded me a bit of Kino no Tabi, there you also get fairy tales that are always a bit more dubious in terms of morality, the only difference is that the stories here have a clearer purpose. That is sometimes a bit too much on top of it, but I could appreciate it otherwise.

Thought it was a successful movie. Bit of a crazy mix of cultivating (a Spaniard going to tell a British story in Hollywood), but the result is quite unique, with a few memorable moments and well executed across the board.

3.5*

To be cherished not only for the beautiful visual effects but also for the charm that the film radiates and above all for the stunning portrayal of the young Lewis MacDougall.

However, the story is intriguing. Young Conor - too old to be a child and too young to be a man - has a hard time. He is severely bullied at school, his father lives separately from him, his grandmother doesn't really need him and his mother is very ill. He cares about everything and it gives him nightmares that land him in a fantasy world, where support but also trials can be found.

Handsome movie. The monster is very ugly, but ultimately ingeniously presented.

A surprisingly good movie. Watched with my 6 year old daughter on a Sunday morning. Thinking of a nice movie for her. Turned out to be a sad film with a heavy underlying theme about letting go of a loved one. Tears welling on the couch with my daughter who had long since lost her focus and was on the couch next to me on her phone.

Daddy what is it? Why are you crying?

Think it was the Sunday morning setting. Simes you watch a movie at just the right time. The magic of movies...
