True Grit plot

"The strangest trio ever to track a killer"

Rancher Frank Ross goes on a journey with his help Tom Chaney to buy some horses. After a night that got out of hand in a saloon, Tom shoots Frank dead, steals his money and runs away. Mattie Ross, Frank's wisecracking and calculating daughter, goes to the town in question and inquires with the authorities. However, the local sheriff can't do anything because Tom is on Indian soil. She enlists the help of Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn, a one-eyed US Marshall who is hard hitting, but also a heavy drinker. Rooster is looking for the fugitive outlaw Ned Pepper, and this Ned is said to be in the company of Tom. The Texas Ranger 'La Boeuf' - or 'La Beef' as he calls himself - is also looking for Tom and contacts Mattie and Rooster.

Even with one eye he is still a household name, this John Wayne, but this time there have been a lot of eyes on the unwavering girl that it was all about, with Kim Darby playing that role, there is a Bafta nomination after all. as a promising star, but actually shows up in very few feature films afterwards.

And the western? Well, a good one I guess. Already saw the remake and think both are about equal.

An acceptable plot, cinematically certainly in order and good renditions. Robert Duvall, with a rather short role, also stands out a bit.

The streak of humor, typical of the John Wayne westerns, where one can especially laugh at his rude traits, is in it. The romance is missing, but it can be. Nice final.

Not good.

I already saw the remake about 10 years ago and I like it much better than this original version. The hodgepodge you get here contains a bit of everything: revenge story, a child (obviously played by an adult) who didn't fall for her mouth and a John Wayne who, I think, must be funny. It doesn't work for me.

In any case, a major problem lies with the cast, which I find really weak across the board. Kim Darby doesn't give a shit, neither does Wayne - not a great actor by any means. But supporting roles such as that of LaBeouf are also really weak. Robert Duvall as the villain - a surprise indeed - is also barely out of the picture.

And so a film of + 2 hours quickly lasts longer than it seems. The fact that the remake is still pretty good in the memory does not detract from the fact that things could have been a bit better here. Nevertheless, I'll be glad that the remake has been made - it's a rare case where it's a hefty improvement.

There is not much bad to say about the production. Direction and photography by Hathaway and Ballard testify to craftsmanship. Excellent score by the legendary Elmer Bernstein. The script is well put together, with a balance between action and character drawing of the characters. It is an exaggeration that John Wayne received an Oscar for his acting performance, but hey, that's a political decision like any other.

I especially wasn't a fan of the character Kim Darby plays. A teeny know-it-all, baby bookkeeper (though in his twenties in real life) who lectures everyone until it gets tiresome. Always with your finger in the air. She reminds me of someone I used to go to school with. Really annoying.

Good to see once but it will stay here.
