A charming drama based on a true story. A Tibetan patrol led by Ritai scours the barren plains of Kekexili in search of poachers targeting the endangered antelopes.

Of course, there are the beautiful landscapes people roam through. Dreamy scenes that occasionally had me dozing off are interspersed with confrontations between the patrol and poachers. This makes for some entertaining scenes, and they demonstrate the patrol's determination to fight the poachers.

It's great to see how close-knit the patrol is, but it's a shame the characters remain superficial. Otherwise, some scenes like the execution and the quicksand—very convincingly done—would have had more impact. It also has a good running time; it really didn't need to be any longer. It kept me captivated until the end.

Cinematically beautiful, of course, with many beautiful, compelling shots of people and nature, the powerfully and concisely told story, and the scenes of violence in the face of the sad event. It feels like a kind of semi-documentary when the several non-professionals, in their ordinary lives and in their unwavering ambition, are shown.

Good work.

A beautiful film. I read somewhere that National Geographic was also one of the film's distributors, which is understandable, as they say, because at times it's just like a beautiful documentary. And then there's the horrific true story, set in the very same location where it actually happened.

Wonderful, raw, beautiful film...
