Mogambo plot

"Flaming love found in the savage heart of the jungle!"

The sensual war widow Honey Bear Kelly from New York travels to Kenya at the invitation of the Maharaja of the Indies. When she arrives at the property of Victor Marswell, the leader of a safari company, it turns out that she has come for nothing. The Maharaja left early. Because Honey Bear can only return to civilization in ten days, she accompanies her longtime love Victor Marswell and his two clients, the anthropologist Donald Nordley and his attractive wife Linda, on a safari to a gorilla colony. During the journey, Honey Bear makes no bones about the fact that she is still in love with the gruff but attractive Victor. But Victor has lost his heart to the sophisticated Linda.

Phew.

Clark Gable, two women and a lot of jungle. And that in a rather brutal 50s guise. Women are thrown around vigorously, animal trafficking is an honest profession and the black tribes are perfect neo-slaves. Yes, today's moral crusader can already start eating his way.

But above all it is a somewhat boring, predictable film, in which Gable's choice is difficult to explain. As is often the case, Grace Kelly is a gray mouse, a boring character with rather annoying mannerisms. Gardner is a lot more lively, although a bit too stupid to really be a fun character.

The shots of the animals are edited rather clumsily among the rest, the romantic vicissitudes are not really interesting and 2 hours for this somewhat corny meandering is far too long. My third Ford wasn't exactly a success.

1.0*

The poster actually says it all, it is not an adventure film but a romantic Hollywood film. Some band work, as was often the case from that time where studios still had a say and stars were there to express themselves. It is therefore craftsmanship (in the style of that time, of course) with actors Clark Gable, Grace Kelly and Ava Gardner. Still a film with some tension behind the scenes. Gardner was not the choice of director John Ford and he occasionally took it out on her. Whereupon Gable got angry with Ford. In the meantime, he also had a relationship with Grace Kelly during production, before marrying his next love for the 5th time after the film. Gardner's husband Frank Sinatra came by again to calm things down. Actually, I think a film about this film would be more interesting.

This isn't bad for fans of old Hollywood, of course. The three main actors do what you would expect from them. Gable has gotten a bit older and you can tell. It is far from an exception, but it does stand out compared to the two younger actresses. These ladies also play it safe. Craftsmanship from old Hollywood, while figures such as James Dean and Marlon Brando gradually changed the style of acting. The acting is not bad, the story is quite good but also fun to follow. The decoration looks a bit clumsy and yet outdated. Most scenes were also recorded in the studio. Then a film in a tropical environment doesn't really stand out.

A film only for lovers of Hollywood 50s and romance. If not, you better stay away from this.

I personally thought it was a wrong choice to turn this into a love triangle, Victor and Eloise had much more chemistry with each other than Victor and wallflower Linda.

Gardner plays wonderfully again here and Gable is back on track as a rough guy with a small heart.

further beautiful images on location.
