Let's take Henry Miller's "Tropic of Cancer" and turn it into some Euro-trash!!!

Apart from the title (shock value), the film has nothing to do with the book.

Director Gian Paolo Lomi liked it in Haiti, so he thought if I could convince some producers to let me make a film here, I could hang around here for a while. Producers demanded spaghetti western director Mulargia for assistance, but he saw that things were going well and lay down on the beach. Lead actor De Teffè personally interfered with the script because he was afraid of not getting enough close-ups and screen-time, but all his additions were cut out just as cheerfully during the editing.

Still, it was a very fine example of Euro-trash in Giallo atmosphere... including the characteristic unknown killer with leather gloves.

A thousand deaths for a quarter!!!...well at least one corpse or attack every five minutes.

It doesn't have much to do with literature, but with sweaty white people in a sweltering Haiti during the time of Papa Doc and a lot of voodoo threats.

According to the director, the voodoo ritual is a recording of a real ritual and filmed by himself on site with permission.

Sultry film thanks to the inimitable setting in Haiti where mystery and death lurk around the corner. You have to be careful with the versions of this film that are in circulation. Unfortunately, I watched a censored version from which the more spicy scenes were cut, although they are essential to the atmosphere of this film. In the 1970s it was customary in Italy to cut films according to customer demand.

But what remains of it (minus 4 minutes) is still worth it. The story is well paced and the murders are worth seeing. And then there is the soundtrack by Piero Umiliani that never disappoints. If I get the chance, I'll watch the full version.
