Crossfire plot

"Hate is like a loaded gun!"

Homicide Detective Finlay must investigate the murder of the Jew Joseph Samuels. The unstable and slightly injured demobilized soldier 'Monty' Montogommery is the prime suspect. He was spotted in a bar with his mates Floyd, Arthur and Leroy, along with Joseph Samuels. Due to excessive drinking, Montgommery's comrades can barely remember what happened on the murder night. Floyd even went with the attractive blonde animation girl Ginny that night. Finlay, meanwhile, gets support from Sergeant Kelly, who knows the four soldiers and suspects that anti-Semitism is at play. But then Floyd is also murdered…

Good film about a detective who has to solve the murder of a man involving some soldiers. An excellent first half that in itself is a fairly standard murder investigation. The second half contains the best scenes, mainly because it introduces racism as a motive. Good acting from the entire cast.

Interesting film noir in which a murder investigation is central. A film that mainly consists of many and long dialogues, often one on one. At times also a rather bizarre headstrong approach of the police inspector by having conversations and questions conducted by or in the presence of those involved.

The film starts with the murder itself where you witness the silhouettes depicted on the wall. Moments later, the lifeless body of the victim comes into view and the screen is split into a partially black screen when the perpetrator comes to check with the victim whether he is really dead. Extremely atmospheric approach to the event and a great opening scene!

Racism Is at the root of the murder and fortunately the viewer soon knows what the problem is. The film sags a bit halfway through and the search for Mitch dragged on a bit too long. Excellent acting and more than decent film.

One of those noirs in which the dialogue takes precedence over the action. In one way or another, these kinds of films appeal to me and this one is no different. An hour and a half of chatter with the obligatory flashback here and there - with more chatter - and I was on the edge of my seat. Nice of Dmytryk & co how they keep the atmosphere going. A visual highlight is the meeting between George Cooper and Jacqueline White under the pulsating light of the cinema. Their doubts and insecurities about their relationship thus get a visual effect. The kind of scene you see more often in noir.
The music of caretaker Roy Webb is also welcome again. In addition to the semi-classical pieces, he also brings atmospheric pieces of jazz. And last but not least, we are dealing with a bunch of top actors here. Robert Ryan is wonderfully insufferable, Robert Mitchum is wonderfully phlegmatic and Gloria Grahame's contribution is also top notch. And then there is Paul Kelly's again delicious snack, in the kind of role that a David Lynch will also appreciate.
The screenplay initially seems standard crime/noir, although it takes a moralizing turn towards the end. Without it getting annoying.

Very successful movie.
