Proteus plot

In 1725, a young black Khoi shepherd, Claas Blank, is sentenced to forced labor on Robben Island in Cape Colony. There he meets Virgil Tyne, an English botanist who soon falls under the spell of the young and quick-witted Claas. In prison Claas works together with a Dutch sailor, Rijkhaart Jacobsz, who has been convicted of sodomy. Claas and Rijkhaart feel strongly attracted to each other and start a sexual relationship.
