Nice slasher, where the murders are indeed no longer very original... after two times. Ok, the killer does it slightly differently every time (sometimes from a great distance, then again from underwater), but there is not much variety in murder weapons.
The twist at the end was fun, but among all the suspects the murderer was quickly picked out.

3.5*

Just watched it again for the first time in 20 years. This movie always stuck with me for some reason. And I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Everything was just hilariously wrong, especially the ending. The murders weren't original, but it's always fun to see someone get impaled. The acting was of course very bad as was the dialogue. But the atmosphere was very nice and so was the soundtrack.

As a fan of the subgenre, I obviously had to give this "Fatal Games" a chance and I was pleasantly surprised.

The film is very clearly low budget, but the maker has done his best to make the film seem more than what it is. For example, there are a number of scenes where a large audience appears to be cheering in the background, while there are actually only a few people standing there.

Furthermore, the cast seems to do their best to see who can do the most overacting. One wrong and clumsy conversation follows another at a rapid pace. This alone provides enough entertainment for fans of bad B-horror flicks from the 80's.

"Fatal Games" is yet another slasher with a lot of sports woven into it (see Graduation Day, Death Spa or Killer Workout, among others), but still manages to be entertaining here and there. The whole setting just exudes the atmosphere of the 80s in the US, something that many enthusiasts will appreciate.

Here and there a funny subplot arises, such as the experimental program of the youth.

Furthermore, the film is enhanced by a repetitive synth tune that really sounds so wrong and cheap that the scenes evoke a laugh rather than being scary.

However, they could have put a little more effort into the murderer, because a person in a raincoat just doesn't do it for me. The murder weapon, a throwing spear, was also not found particularly original and the murders are therefore somewhat monotonous in nature.

A film that will probably only be enjoyed by true slasher fans.
