If there is no one to pull me up, then on foot....: it produces by far the most funny gags and scenes from this "The Navigator", in which, as expected, coincidence, clumsiness and also ingenuity are a Buster Keaton delivered at its best.

You may sometimes find it stupid and silly, but sometimes it is masterful, and if you really can't laugh with it, there is something wrong with it...

Reasonable.

In the meantime I know what to expect from Buster Keaton and his films. Similarly, The Navigator is not very surprising, but just solid entertainment. To my liking there are a little too few typical stunts - the scenes mostly rely on chance and the (kind of) love game between the two main characters.

It's all smooth enough and every now and then it can be described as 'droll', but I mainly watch Keaton to see great stunts. With his somewhat dry appearance he distinguishes himself from a Charles Chaplin, but it is mainly those stunts that do it.

This would be Buster Keaton's most commercially successful film. To think his crew was a bit unhappy after Sherlock Jr did less well at the box office. So you see how the valuation can change over the years and that was more the case with Keaton.

The Navigator has less Keaton's known stunt work, there is more romance and standard slapstick. Even if in Keaton's hands that's not bad. For the drama part, he asked Donald Crisp to commit himself to the comedy. Partly what, for example, Jackie Chan did later when he wanted to focus mainly on the action and the accompanying choreography and less on the rest of the film. Crisp didn't just want to help the film for drama and would leave after a while. As an actor, he later did not bad with an Oscar in 1942.

In 1924 this would have been more accessible to the general public who could not fully appreciate his real stunt work. Almost 100 years later, that stunt work still stands better than this romance. It's still enjoyable, but The Navigator disappears a bit between the rest of Buster Keaton's films without really standing out.
