L'Ange plot

Experimental film by Patrick Bokanowski, a French film alchemist. In addition to highly experimental images, L'Ange shows Breughel- and Bosch-like characters, encased in a 19th-century jacket, who are trapped in their simple or absurd behaviour, mobile on the one hand and frozen in a kind of devilish eternity on the other, and who meet at an indefinable location, on and around, it seems, an immense expressionist staircase leading to a luminous illumination.

Disappointment. Too much repetition, too few (really) beautiful images and it takes too long. In particular, I'm a little surprised that L'Ange is so visually praised here; quite a lot of boring shots seen from above and a lot of static camera angles. Like Mochizuki, I think the less abstract parts, for example the scene in the library, are the weakest. But there was also not enough interesting in the other sequences. If a filmmaker takes so much freedom, you should do more with it as far as I'm concerned.

Mixed success. Some very cool scenes in the first half hour, such as the hyper montage on the stairs and the scene with the pots. But during the scene in the library the film really collapses completely and Bokanowski only has difficulty regaining his bearings towards the end. I also didn't think the soundtrack always worked well. Quite present and compelling, but ultimately perhaps a bit too well-behaved and not really my favorite style.

Peaks and valleys, but otherwise a special film that fans of experimental cinema should definitely see. 3*.

Experimental films are not always easy to understand. I'm not even trying here. However, they are often visually (and aurally) attractive. I can't make much of the various scenes that are discussed. Most scenes also take some time (the fencing, the bath scene, the girl with the milk jug...).

It is a very dark film with many shadows. We play with light or beams of light towards the end. No dialogue and the only sound available was added. The sound is threatening, ominous and then cheerful (bath) or exciting (during the storm). Time is taken for the scenes, the transitions are very restless or just too quiet (black area).

Perhaps special for enthusiasts, I don't really know, let's keep it that way. Was once in the MM list top 1000. L'Ange was in the overall 862nd place in 2013 with just 2 votes (3rd and 79th place). That's how you get there, of course. It was a one hit wonder...
