"One shot is all it takes"
Young Dick lives in the poor mining town of Estherslope. When he one day finds a revolver, despite his pacifist convictions, he is attracted to it. With his revolver in hand, he manages to recruit a group of youngsters from the town to join a secret club called The Dandies. The club bases its rules on the principles of pacifism, but also on firearms. Despite their belief in the most important rule ("never draw your weapon"), they soon find themselves in a situation that shows that rules are made to be broken.

Was really looking forward to a Thomas Vinterberg movie after seeing the phenomenal Submarino. Then this film is a bit disappointing, because it does not offer what I expected and hoped for. There is too much poetic twisting around the axis and when the film turns after an hour, the story loses its approach and its soul. The film often cannot escape predictability, which is a shame. And somewhere in the beginning you already see that the last half hour will be as it is. Of course, a film about a revolver cannot be made without morality.
I found the design and assembly interesting. There is a constant, great atmosphere and the playing is good.

You can see that after Festen Thomas Vinterberg, as far as Submarino, went in a different direction. First, we're presented with a rather vague SF story involving snow in the summer with Its All About Love. Now he comes with Dear Wendy, who you can't add to that list at all, but the film is quite good and you can indeed see that Lars von Trier had something to do with this. The decor and that recreated American mining village were certainly attractively recreated. The film was of course shot in Denmark and we have to deal with Dick, who is beautifully portrayed by Jamie Bell (who we also know from Billy Elliot.) Who comes into contact with an ancient revolver and also develops an obsession for it. Since he is a pacifist, he wants to create an alternative club where you can use your weapon without harming anyone. The club is called The Dandies. He quickly attracts friends who also want to join. We sometimes get confrontations with each other under pressure, and towards the end the film suddenly turns into a real action movie.
Yes, a film that goes in its own direction and does what it feels like. But at least I enjoyed it and the film surprised me well. This was probably also some kind of film against American society regarding the gun control. Even if you have no bad intentions and you try to avoid things, things always go wrong.
No, this was a fine work by Vinterberg.

Oh oh what a whipped movie you became”.
The narrator/main character and his story did not interest me. Coming of age elements: the discovery of the revolver, a map, a private fortress , created atmosphere, but no surprise. My hopes for a surprising twist were repeatedly dashed with rather boring "issues" in the perception of a couple of teenagers. Now I'm all in favor of taking things out of context or highlighting them completely differently, but in this experiment Vinterberg and Von Trier miss the point in my opinion with as maerk points out "pathetic hassle ". Should I now think about Western or American society? Is this movie really making fun of anything? Of course I can imagine something: it concerns senseless violence by initially innocent characters, but that was it. As far as the makers meant something mocking with it: it seems a bit bland to me. In light of the attacks and the crazy and shooting youth in American schools, the film is a rather idiotic and weak display of the romance of a couple of teenagers that got out of hand. Now, as far as I'm concerned, "idiot" can also be funny, deviant or shocking, but this movie isn't. Rather annoying, too made and a bit far-fetched. It's all a bit too serious for me, that dandy game.
Do I really have nothing positive to say? Yes it is. Besides the coming of age atmosphere, I also appreciate the well-nicked (western) effects , the stills of the X-rays, the introduction round: the names of the dandies, etc. . The music is also really a bright spot. Perhaps a nod to Tarantino and Rodriguez in terms of western atmosphere and music? All in all, a mediocre compromise between a coming of age movie and a western.
