"SOME WIVES CHEAT BECAUSE THEIR HUSBANDS DO... AND SOME BECAUSE THEY'RE JUST NO GOOD!"
Young unemployed author Adam gets a job at the Chronicle newspaper. He may treat letters to the editor in the lonely hearts section. The newspaper's editor-in-chief doesn't believe the letters are genuine and to prove otherwise, Adam contacts a reader. The married woman embarks on a love affair with Adam and promptly the jealous husband shows up at the office with a loaded gun.

My respect that Clift after his accident during the filming of Raintree County (Film, 1957) returned to work so quickly the work went, but it's pretty clear that he's quite miscast as the "unemployed young man" Adam White. Aside from the fact that all his dialogue was quite difficult due to the recovery from the accident, he was clearly already too old for a role that was clearly intended for a 20-year-old-James-Dean type (hence the young Dolores Hart was probably cast as his girlfriend/opposite).
As soon as Stapleton comes into the picture, the confusion increases completely and you don't really understand why Adam makes the choices he does anymore. Well acted, but the script should have been adapted to the ages of the actors involved.
