"It happens in the best of families. But you'd never think it could happen to her!"

Charlotte (Bette Davis) lives in isolation and her mother has called in a psychiatrist. She tells him about the relationship in which she was happy, but which was not approved by her mother. The psychiatrist believes she should take a cruise to South America to find happiness. During the cruise, she meets Jerry (Paul Henreid).
