Political and autobiographical drama in which journalist Nick Gage seeks out his mother Eleni's executioner; she was executed during the Greek Civil War between royalists and communists (1946-1949). This was one of Malkovich's first leading roles. In this type of film, which also includes Killing Fields, Salvador, and Year of the Living Dangerously, this is one of the more human examples. The greater part of Eleni's fate is told in flashback; she often has to make painful choices to save her children. Sometimes a bit dull at the beginning before the film finds pace, but it picks up solidly in the second half.
