Angela's Ashes plot

Just when many Irish travel to America in hopes of finding work and happiness, the McCourt family leaves New York to return to their hometown of Limerick. But they are not really welcome. Young Frank is bullied by his new classmates and called 'Yank'. Father McCourt is a dreamer. Unable to find a job, he flees the responsibility of his family at the local pub. Frank's mother cannot possibly take care of the education of the children alone and she does not have to count on help from the family. With a good dose of fighting spirit and humor, however, Frank holds his ground. He has a dream: to become a writer and return to America.

Don't be so positive. A well painted picture of the hunger and misery in Ireland indeed, but this could also have been told in half the time. After about half the playing time I got the "well I've seen it" feeling. Not bad in itself from Parker; could just be told faster. 2.5*

Finally seen!

Great movie with a good cast.
Nice book and the movie is also very good, Alan Parker has outdone himself by putting this down. The scenes were very good and flowed together well. The music of John Williams made this film 1 beautiful and dramatic whole. Also a nice ending with the setting sun, the statue of liberty and Williams' music. I enjoyed with a capital G.

Gripping film adaptation by Alan Parker of the beautiful autobiography by the American writer Frank McCourt about his disastrous childhood in Limerick. The unimaginable poverty and dull misery in an Irish working-class neighborhood during the Depression years is perhaps best illustrated by the fact that it rains for almost the entire film. Despite the music by John Williams, it doesn't make you happy.

Superb role by Emily Watson, who, in accordance with the Irish national character, can almost seamlessly let a smile and a tear merge. Film is at least as good as Parker's equally sublime The Commitments (1991).
