London mobster Harold Shand (Bob Hoskins) is about to make a lucrative business deal when two of his men are liquidated on Good Friday. This affects the deal badly, so Harold must find out who the culprits are as soon as possible.

The story sounded more fun beforehand than I actually liked the movie itself. Bob Hoskins plays a strong role as a gangster who has to deal with including the IRA and liquidations of his own people . Also a decent role by Helen Mirren. And oh yes, you would almost forget, Pierce Brosnan in one of his first movie roles. Film has a pretty gray atmosphere and some fairly violent moments, but the pace and the amount of tension were a bit disappointing.

Very strong film with a no nonsense story about a hard gangster who causes a lot of misery. The supporting roles are strong, Mirren plays a very good role as a strong woman but Hoskins is great as Shand. Shand is a tantrum who greatly overestimates himself. Hoskins hits this beautifully. The final shot delivers a memorable scene that would only be available to a single actor.
