Pauline & Paulette plot

Pauline is a 'little girl' of 66 years old; she cannot read, write or speak correctly. She lives in Lochristi, a village not far from Ghent. Since the death of their parents, her older sister, Martha, takes care of her. Then Martha suddenly dies. Her will states that all her valuables and the proceeds from the sale of her house would go to her sisters, provided one of them took care of Pauline herself. Both sisters are interested in the inheritance, but neither of the two - neither Paulette, who has a small shop in the village, nor Cécile, who lives in Brussels - wants to take care of Pauline...

Sympathetic romanticized disarmed debut film by Lieven Debrauwer. Not a topper, but quite nice for a select niche audience. In that sense it falls within the line of Sprakeloos by Hilde Van Mieghem. Top actresses Dora van der Groen or Ann Petersen would also have decorated a role there if they were still alive. The naturalness, the wonder and other emotions of Pauline, ... what a performance by Dora!

Both actresses acted phenomenally well and carry the film to an acceptable level. For the rest, this fairly short film (barely 78 minutes) is unambitious and very simple. However, the circumstances of taking on the care of a disabled family member can provide enough material to make something interesting out of it. It should make you think, but the film fails to do that. The content of the film is too limited for that and there is too little offered visually and in terms of editing or camera work.

Legacies and the associated capital is often a motive in itself for surviving relatives to adopt a benevolent attitude. This is also a common thread throughout the film in Pauline and Paulette, but this was again too little explored, which is a shame. The scenes with Cécile's French-speaking friend, on the other hand, were interesting. Cliche, but ok. Decor and costuming were also quite ok, I also thought the music was appropriate and quite nice (especially the second part, which is more bombastic). Despite the many shortcomings, it was still a sufficient fact, if only out of respect for Dora and Ann.

Even after many years, on a second viewing, this film still comes across as moving.

Not so dramatically developed, but it is a film about being mentally disturbed, loneliness and sisterly love.

One can rub the film left and right, it is all swept under the table by the masterful, empathetic interpretations of Dora van der Groen and Ann Petersen. Indelibly the scene with watering the flowerbed.

Successful debut film by Lieven Debrauwer at the time.

Good film in which two sisters have to take care of their mentally handicapped sister. In itself a rather sad affair, which, however, does make for a warm film. It may not be too much (also because of the somewhat short playing time), but the characters and the problems come out well. A beautiful, touching role by Dora van der Groen as Pauline. A small 3.5 stars.
