A nice soundtrack for a partly interesting film.

The voice changer is hilarious rather than adding to the mystery, especially since they reveal who the killer is in the first half of the movie.

Too bad, because the killer still has a pretty good mask and not revealing it would have added to the tension. Now there is unfortunately quite little tension and the film has to rely more on the killer's original ideas here and there.

The acting is of varying quality. Some overact it quite a bit, but the "family (father, mother and son)" isn't doing too bad.

A nice film for fans of (early) slashers/giallos (to which this film tends more).

Foreign.

Weird slasher, very poorly executed, but in a way still quite entertaining. This is mainly due to the absurd elements that this film regularly throws through. They make this film a fairly entertaining whole, which does not bring anything new under the horizon.

Especially the build-up to horror is not very innovative. Boring build-up mainly, with little tension. It's a pity indeed that you can see the killer's face after the first call, and even better after that (his whole appearance). It is immediately noticeable that a lot of thought has gone into the name of the murderer, which only concerns the word "evil". Couldn't be more creative..

Visually ugly shot and the kills are mainly off-screen. Boring murders with some stabbing where you see the typical hand go up in the air and hack into something. There is not much more to experience at slasher level. The first part of the film is also often taken up by concert footage, or at least, a film that takes place during a concert. The band that plays is used extensively, which ends up being too repetitive.

Acting is pretty bad as well. Only Niven himself wants to have fun sometimes, the rest of the crew members are very mediocre. Cramer is very bad and Kelly is also very bad at it. That is of course to be expected from an 80s film, but that does not make it any less annoying as a whole.

The bizarre elements ensure that this film can still be watched, such as a guy who pulls a pair of panties over his head. Wonderfully absurd, but adds little else. The other parts of the film should have a serious tone, which cannot be taken seriously due to the many illogical scenes and film errors. So this film falls into moderation that can only be done thanks to some stupid scenes. Very bad.

Hidden Crime Slasher Gem!

I randomly turned on New Year's Evil because I happened to come across the movie and I had never heard of this flick, even though I've been quite into 80s horror. Very nice 80's movie though. I don't mind!

The acting is good, the characters are engaging and the story is simple but fun! Absurdity is certainly to be found in this hidden gem and it reinforces the general atmosphere of the film. The killer's voice (when calling) is quite comical but not disturbing, although it reminds me a bit of a muppet or something.

I also notice that the film contains a lot of good music! Pros!

Great ending!

☆4.0 for this great surprise!
