Racing Stripes plot

"Cheer 'til you're horse!"

A baby zebra, accidentally left behind by a circus, is taken into a farm with some hesitation. Seeing racehorses who share his love for running, he thinks he is a racehorse too. With the help of the other animals on the farm and a teenage girl who dreams of becoming a jockey one day, he overcomes existing prejudices and his own doubts. He will try to make his dream come true and he will have to compete against real thoroughbreds in the most important race, the Kentucky Open.

Reasonable, but very standard and moralistic family film. The movie is pretty fun made and is quite funny from time to time. Especially the pelican (voiced by Joe Pantoliano) and the two flies make for some amusing scenes. Yet Racing Stripes remains a very standard children's film and of course as predictable as the plague. For the little ones, the film is probably great fun, but the slightly more mature viewer/movie lover will have to make do with some amusing winks to other films and some fairly fun nonsense here and there.

2.5 stars.

This family film, suspiciously similar to Babe in some ways, is an entertaining film. Nice cast and voice roles from some of the big Hollywood stars including Dustin Hoffman, Whoopie Goldberg and others. The story is well thought out, although not very original, with the addition of the Zebra, but it should not spoil the fun. The film has many nice fragments and also those two flies that I found quite annoying in the beginning became quite funny later on. All in all, Racing Stripes is definitely an entertaining family movie with fun characters and one that never gets boring.

Movies with talking animals are often not the best movies and this movie is proof of that, although the movie isn't as bad as I expected.

The course of the film can often be completely filled in and often there is also an enormous morality woven throughout the film. Racing Stripes is no different from other films in the genre in that respect. Besides some stupid characters, such as the rich female opponent, this film fortunately also has some successful humor. You can see that in the form of two flies and a pelican. The flies in particular provide the much-needed variety between the standard scenes. Thanks to them, the film is fairly easy to sit through, apart from a cute young zebra, the film doesn't have much to offer.
