A chaotic and flashy film that's completely uninteresting. A confusing, suspenseless story, with annoying characters that are loud and ADHD-like.

Between the scenes, we see flashy and noisy popup screens. Someone's apparently playing a killer game, and the goal is to increase your popularity by killing people. That's the gist of the story. Something like that. It kind of went over my head, I think. Not interesting.

The music is overwhelmingly loud and doesn't generate any exciting impulses. It's nerve-racking. Truly awful music.

Bad SFX and bad acting. Even from Sevigny. Ugh! So bad!

Bland, uninteresting mess.

Fine.

I think it's simply not the right time to try something different within the horror genre. Not that #Horror is a flawless horror film, but the film does so much well that you might want to question its ridiculous average.

#Horror is at its strongest when the 12-year-old girls are complete and utter bitches to each other. Truly awful characters who are merciless to each other. It's all nicely exaggerated within the film's horror context, of course, but the core of cyberbullying still comes across quite well.

The film also looks pretty good visually. A cool location, chilly and starkly shot. The soundtrack is also atmospheric and constantly adds something new. The problem is the whole # thing happening in between. The concept isn't all that bad, the execution less so, but it feels more like a somewhat artistic take on something the director isn't entirely comfortable with. A bit like counting counters and Mortal Kombat-esque catchphrases make for a somewhat clumsy whole.

Too bad, because that keeps the film from getting a higher score. The rest is far above average. Great movie.

3.5*

A commendable, yet highly chaotic film production that suffers primarily from a rather loose narrative. This quickly dilutes the meaning of #Horror, but director Tara Subkoff maintains a consistently fast pace and capitalizes on the exceptionally funny interactions between the young cast members. The dialogue is at times truly razor-sharp and therefore quite comical, compensating for the rather tame horror elements. As a viewer, you'll need to pay attention, as the hyperactive structure and breakneck pace can easily make you lose track. A definite pass for the young women's performances, but this film is certainly not solid.
