Jimmy Porter (Richard Burton) is a college graduate who can find no better job than his job in a candy store. His relationship with his wife Alison (Mary Ure) is between real love, when he feels good, and verbal abuse when he feels bad, which is quite common. Alison's best friend Helena Charles (Claire Bloom) advises Alison to run away from her marriage. With no one left to mess with, Jimmy begins an affair with Helena.
