Last movie in my Halloween series this year. As far as I'm concerned, "The Grudge" is a difficult film to rate. In itself there is a good pace (the murders follow each other in quick succession) , and the selection of Japanese actors/actresses always adds value in my opinion in horror films (ie Japanese are the best at facial expressions ). The story is also intriguing, but what bothers me personally is that there is a bit too much (and too noncommittal) working with time jumps and jumping from one piece to the next. The overview is partly lost as a result, which in itself does not have to be a disadvantage (there are plenty of examples of films where this is an extra asset), but in this film it seems rather to be a hodgepodge to complete the film within the "required" duration. and the relevance of certain pieces (even after the end of the film) is not entirely clear.

Expected more.

The Grudge was a movie I've wanted to see for a long time. Mainly because he seems to be very scary. And I wanted to have a creepy night, so I turned on The Grudge. I have to say I expected a lot more from this.

The mysterious atmosphere is well present from the start, but it all takes a little too long in my opinion the first hour. Because of this I also started to find the film very boring and not very exciting. Fortunately, the last half hour adds a good atmosphere with a strong tempo.

The mysterious atmosphere that is not very predictable, which is also good could not save the boring first part. So I really only enjoyed the second part.

Seen a long time ago, doesn't mean much.

Well, I'm not much of a Shimizu connoisseur, but I suspect he's one of those directors who can do even more with less budget. Also witness the score of the Ju-on Grudge films. I am not that familiar with his work, although I do have a few of his films on my shelf.

This Grudge uses scares through bombastic sounds and music. Doesn't work anymore and therefore completely misses its target. Other than that, it doesn't have much to offer. The Japanese children are a bit creepy, a few scenes like in that corridor at the company are constructively still quite exciting, but only as separate parts.

2*
