Beautiful observational film about dysfunctional family members who live together in their parents' house due to a lack of housing in the city. Sometimes the film lacks focus, which is then made up for in the follow-up film The Prefab People.

Acclaimed Bela.

Acclaimed director Béla Tarr made his debut with Családi Tüzfészek, shot at the end of the 1970s. A penetrating family drama with which he was still far from his later successes, but at the age of 22 already managed to make a big impression. The hopeless existence in a Hungary where housing has to contend with enormous shortages is presented to the viewer in a documentary-like style through close-ups of conflicts.

Particularly at the beginning, it is somewhat unclear to discover a line, partly due to the inadequate subs (not everything is subtitled) and the turning away from the camera (in and out of focus). It sometimes feels like a mixed bag, with the cheerful music in stark contrast to the depressing images. A rape that is experienced all the more horribly up close, a disappointing conversation with a housing officer. Sadness everywhere.

Like the focus - both literally and figuratively - the film as a whole is hit and miss. Despite the fact that amateurs are used and many extras turn out to be just passers-by who look suspiciously into the camera, the acting performances in particular are quite strong and raw. Unfortunately, the constantly flaring up quarrels in combination with the missing structure tire and things eventually lose their power.

Probably mandatory reading for true arthouse fans because of the influence the filmmaker later gained in cinemaland. But according to those in the know, this was more of an exercise for his later work. The restored film is part of the Béla Tarr Collection, which can now be streamed via myLum or will soon be available for purchase as a Lumière DVD box set. His 7-hour magnum opus Sátántangó is one of four films to admire.

Finally the gap Béla Tarr filled. And more will follow. I understand here and there that this is not Tarr's best work. That is what the average suggests. Nevertheless, moderately to reasonably enjoyed Family nest where the harmony within a family is about to burst because different generations are forced to live under the same small roof.

The pater familias sharpens it and is open to little reason. The understanding that may have crumbled has crumbled today. The daughter-in-law with whom he has an ambivalent relationship is desperately looking for a solution for another accommodation. She is not (immediately) allocated social housing and the scene with the bureaucratic official is very strong: he is stoic, she is desperately emotional.

Nevertheless, I missed some coherence in the film. Here and there a striking scene, but as a whole I didn't get there. Apparently I'm not alone in that.
