"Scorching lead-hot action all the way!"
Ex-Sheriff Ben Brigade is now a bounty hunter. He succeeds: the wanted murderer Billy John is in his hands. Ben and Billy make their way to Santa Cruz, where Billy will be handed over to the court. Along the way, the handsome widow Carrie Lane and the deserters Sam Boone and Whit join them. But the drive to Santa Cruz is not without its dangers. Mescalero's want Carrie Lane, Billy's outlaw friends, led by his older brother Frank, want to free him and Sam also wants Carrie Lane, but especially the bounty for Billy.

A short western by Budd Boetticher and also the first I've seen of him.
It is a nice film I must say. Quite straightforward, but beautifully shot, with a fresh and clear use of color and fine acting. Randolph Scott may not be the actor with the most charisma, but he holds his own here. The supporting roles include real strong western actors, such as James Coburn and Lee Van Kleef. Karen Steele is not only a beautiful appearance but also a solid actress.
Furthermore, the story is quite nice and has a pleasant pace. When one character does something, another has to react to it, and that goes on for the entire film. The best thing is that Ride Lonesome ends on its climax, with a beautifully filmed final scene.
A great western, certainly one of the better films in the genre.

I've said it before: Westerns aren't really my thing, with a few exceptions. Director (and in this case producer) Budd Boeticcher made one of those exceptions. He makes phenomenal use of the Cinemascope format to create this gruesome tale of revenge starring Randolph Scott, Lee Van Cleef and James Coburn. It must have been one of the inspirations for Sergio Leone (and especially 'Once Upon A Time In The West').

Reasonable.
Very classic and compact western, this Ride Lonesome. That title is remarkable considering the course of the story. Rather than showdowns, the film wants to focus on the psychological tendencies between all the characters. For that, I would have needed a more modern acting cast. In any case, I am someone who often has trouble with the somewhat stiff and theatrical way of acting that was common for (say) 1970.
Here too, I sometimes find that a bit off, but that is separate from other things that make it worthwhile. For example, despite or partly because of the short playing time, it is a balanced film. I am glad that such shorter films also exist, because with half an hour longer I might have found this a gruelling sit. The famous final shot is a nice conclusion by the way.
