Destination Moon plot
A businessman wants to be the first into space and arranges an expedition so he can beat the Russians. The American astronauts fly there and set up a base, but they find they may not have enough fuel to return to Earth...

The first SF movie of the 1950s and actually one of the first, if not the first, of the "Rocket-with-Astronauts-Goes-to-Space" type. It is still kept close to home here, because people go to the moon. Incidentally, Destination Moon has an educational character here and there. That Woody Woodpecker video, for example, was intended for the widest possible audience (young & old), I think. It just makes the movie more fun actually

Almost more of a protocol documentary about what a moon flight would look like in 1950, and that is quite accurate, as has been noted here before. Sober and unsentimental, no romances or personal traumas to process; it is almost a shame that Joe Sweeney's character is needed for the comic relief ("Can you see Brooklyn? I wonder who's pitching!"). The absence of famous faces with all the heroic or other associations that entails greatly helps the sense of truth—or perhaps better said, the probability—and the moon looks beautiful—in any case, the FX are still quite impressive, except for a few slip-ups, such as that panoramic shot of the rocket model with astronaut figurines walking over it in stop-motion, but who cares?
