Italian Carla (Gina Lollobrigida) had affairs during World War II with three soldiers - Phil Newman (Phil Silvers), Justin Young (Peter Lawford), and Walter Braddock (Telly Savalas). When she discovers she is pregnant after the army has disappeared, she convinces all three soldiers that he is the father of her child. All men respond by sending money to Carla every month (for 20 years). In order not to lose her prestige, Carla tells the villagers that the father was one Eddie Campbell, a never-ending soldier who "died" in battle. After twenty years, the three soldiers (including women and children) return to the village for a reunion.
