...and if we hadn't already understood that this is a film that would like to follow in the footsteps of a famous secret agent, then the sometimes ridiculously busy soundtrack makes that clear. The young Hopkins does a good job, Robert Morley is always funny and the locations are beautiful, but the plot is too much like a boy's book (mysteriously missing ships with gold?!), the setting is too limited and the [i]whodunit[ /i] element is not very intriguing. A sympathetic attempt to launch a series with a new hero, but substandard quality; Hopkins would have to wait a while (two decades) for star status.

Nice adventure film that sometimes reminds of Bond. Now half a century old, so that gives an idea of the length of Anthony Hopkins' career. I give it 3;5*, not because it is technically brilliant... no, I still think a Bond film is much better. The bad guys don't come out well here either. I give the 3.5 because I found it a relaxing, amusing film with beautiful Scottish scenery in the background. Castles, wild coastlines, boats sailing on turbulent waves, modern pirates. Can I appreciate all. The British humor is also not forgotten with Robert Morley as "Uncle Arthur", Calvert's superior.

In the year Sean Connery parted ways with James Bond with Diamonds Are Forever, it seems like Anthony Hopkins is auditioning for the role of 007 with this action thriller about the search for a missing ship and its valuable cargo. Indeed, Thunderballl in Scotland in which Hopkins actually deals and takes the necessary blows. But with his cruel eyes and his stoic approach to the character, Hopkins lacks charisma. Robert Morley is entertaining as Calvert's manager and Périer wouldn't have been out of place directing a Bond movie. All in all, quite entertaining, but you immediately understand why Hopkins did not become an action hero. Fortunately, I would say.
